I view therapeutic work as an invitation to turn towards the areas of our lives that are calling to us for some attention. Sometimes this means the challenging, confusing, painful, and mysterious parts of life. Other times it may mean exploring our connection to sense of self, our desires, creativity, and vitality. Therapy helps us to consider where we would like to grow, change, and heal - within a safe-enough space based in curiosity and connection.

Each of us comes from our own context - life is complex, and I think it is valuable to consider all the factors that influence our sense of well-being. This means holding space for social, cultural, economic, and systemic forces that impact our lives. I specialize in working with adolescents and adults who are exploring the intersection of identity, life transition, purpose, and mental health. My doctoral research centers on the normalization of maternal burnout within the American socio-cultural context, and as such I enjoy working with mothers navigating identity, relationships, and mental health.

I received a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute, and am a registered Psychological Associate (PSB 94027089) under the supervision of Dr. Charles Eckhart. I completed my practicum training under the supervision of Dr. Eric Nelson in the Counseling and Psychological Services Center (CAPS) at Westmont College, and my pre-Doctoral Internship as a Psychological Associate in private practice under the supervision of Dr. Darren Del Castillo.

Charles Eckhart, PhD

I became a Clinical Psychologist because the work of psychotherapy (and the study of psychology as a whole) is at base, the work of being human with others. All the things that are important in life are relevant in psychotherapy: relationships, family history, ones personality, ones quiet inner struggles, our wishes, desires, longing, fantasy, grief, the list goes on. For me, these experiences matter the most: how we think about and reflect on our inner world, how we interact with the world around us, how we make use of our strengths and challenges, and how we make meaning of our experiences.

I have a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute (c. 2017), and completed a two year psychoanalytic psychotherapy certificate training at The New Center for Psychoanalysis (2022), which qualifies graduates for affiliate membership in the International Psychoanalytic Association. I have taught at numerous graduate programs including Pacifica Graduate Institute’s Clinical Psychology Doctoral programs where I served as the Director of Clinical Training, and taught numerous courses on clinical training, psychoanalytic theory, psychopathology, and qualitative research. I am currently a visiting professor at the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis teaching courses in clinical training and psychoanalytic theory. My research interests include psychoanalytic theory and technique; clinical supervision; personality development; identity formation and lifespan development; intergenerational relationships; the psychology of money; and more. I live and practice in Santa Barbara, California.
